Why Isn't RAM Replacing The Hard Drive At This Point?

Both RAM and Hard drive are used to store data. RAM is considerably cheap and volatile and is one of the adaptable methods of storing data as we have entered the virtual world. But it is worth pondering that why RAM has not outclassed hard drive until now. Despite lots of technological advancement in the field of cloud-based data storage, why cannot we completely rely on it? There are lots of such questions that revolve in the minds of young computer users, and they feel daunting for being unable to find answers to these questions. In this article, we will talk about how RAM and hard drive are different and why RAM hasn’t replaced hard drive until now. 

What is RAM?

RAM stands for random access memory, which is also known as primary memory. Since it is a kind of memory, it carries data in it. In fact, it is a volatile memory, which means in the case of discontinuous power supply, it loses data. Yes, it requires a constant supply of power to help it withstand its cognition. Therefore, the data storage is temporary in RAM. It can be said the RAM offers a workspace for the user. You can buy more RAM to extend the space to increase computers workspace. You might have heard about extra speedy Mister SDRAM. It does not have any mechanical parts but only has electrical parts like transistors. The size of RAM is smaller than the Hard drive and has a shorter read and write time. It takes some time to assess and everything on a computer. RAM affects the speed of a computer; adequate RAM can decrease the speed of the computer. 

What is a Hard drive?

The hard drive is the secondary memory of a computer. It is a kind of memory that permanently stores the data until you remove it consciously or unconsciously. It means that it stores the data and keeps it protected even if the power supply discontinues or you turn off the system deliberately. It has moving mechanical parts and occupies a larger space in the system. It has a long read and write time, and it takes different time to assess different data. Unlike RAM, a hard drive does not affect the speed of the system. You can increase the storage by buying an additional hard drive for the computer. 

Why RAM has not replaced the Hard drive completely?

The main reasons why RAM cannot replace a hard drive is: 

1.    RAM is volatile: 

The main reason for RAM’s compatibility with the hard drive is its volatile nature. RAM is volatile memory, and the Hard drive is non-volatile, but the data can be erased from it. Though RAM is fast; it does not have the capacity to remember when the system is powered off. So, how could a memory that cannot remember anything that happened 1 sec ago without supply can bear the load of the bulk of crucial data? 

2.    RAM is costly:

Though RAM is considered cheap, it is not cheap in reality. It consumes a lot of energy to store data. You have to keep the system running all way long until you do not need the data anymore. Also, to use lots of RAM, your motherboard needs lots of DIMM sockets. So it increases your costs to use so much RAM.

3.    RAM is not error-free: 

Unlike a Hard drive, RAM is not error-free. Hard drives have zero error tolerance which makes them superior to the RAM and a better choice to save data. 

Bottom Line: 

Time until RAM becomes non-volatile and becomes capable to store data permanently; it cannot replace a hard drive. We can only wait for innovation in RAM. But until that time, RAM and Hard drive will work the way they do today.
